BOB Believes We CAN Defeat Hunger!!!
- The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia will be the beneficiary of over 81,500 pounds of food after the 12th Annual Hampton Roads Canstruction® competition and display. The CANstruction design/build competition Awards Ceremony was held locally last night at the Selden Arcade in downtown Norfolk and the “canstructures” are on public display in both Selden and Monticello Arcades through November 24th. “This year, we are very excited about the structures being built,” says Marianne Smith, Chief Development Officer of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. “Not only have they increased in number, but they have increased the amount of food being donated – 81,500 pounds at a minimum! This event is extra-special because it brings the design community together with college students to do something wonderful for individuals who are struggling in this area. This year’s event has shown a 62% increase in food contributions that will be donated to the Foodbank. This amount translates into 63,672 meals. Farm Fresh Food and Pharmacy is the Gold Can sponsor, contributing all the non-perishable food items for the 4 college design teams from Hampton University, Old Dominion University, and Tidewater Community College. Pictures of past entries, event history, and additional information are available on the CANstruction website, www.foodbankonline.org/canstruction/index.html.

BOB Invites You To Make A Difference in 2008!

Among the many affected by the fire on December 20th that destroyed the Zion Baptist Church in Portsmouth were Joe and Alison Elder, owners of Skipjack Nautical Wares on High Street. The Elders' business and 2nd floor apartment home both were a total loss.

Performers Bob Zentz, the Tanner's Creek Whalers and Blackbeard's Crew have collaborated with the historic Commodore Theatre to present a benefit concert of maritime music in support of the Elders' efforts to rebuild their business, home and lives. The concert beginning at 12 noon on Sunday January 13, will precede the 2 PM matinee showing of the movie, National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Cost for the movie is $7 per person. A suggested $10 donation is requested of those arriving early for the concert and all proceeds from the food sales during the event will be contributed to the Friends of Skipjack Fund. Olde Towne Portsmouth icon, Col. Crawford, portrayed by Eric Price, will be on hand to help emcee the event.

For more information, contact the Friends of Skipjack at 406-3000.
